TL;DR: On the Concept2 BikeErg, RPM is full crank revolutions per minute (same as most spin bikes). Concept2's product manual targets 60–80 RPM for general aerobic work; their training articles extend most sessions to 80–100 RPM. Match music with 1:1 (BPM = RPM) or 2:1 (BPM = 2 × RPM). Steady Zone 2 at 70–85 RPM usually sounds best at 140–170 BPM using 2:1.
You set damper to 3, settle into 78 RPM, and the console feels fine—until the chorus drops and your legs either sprint to 92 or stall at 65. The BikeErg does not forgive rhythm drift the way a magnetic spin bike does. Power rises fast with leg speed, so a sloppy tempo costs watts immediately.
What BikeErg RPM actually measures
RPM on the Concept2 BikeErg counts complete pedal revolutions per minute, displayed in the upper-right corner of the Performance Monitor (PM). One revolution = one full circle of the crank, not one leg push.
This is not Assault Bike arm-leg RPM (those machines usually sit much lower—see our air bike RPM chart). It is also not rowing SPM or SkiErg pull rate. Same unit name, different machine, different numbers.
Official Concept2 cadence zones
Concept2 publishes two overlapping ranges depending on context:

Why the spread? The BikeErg is air-resistance driven. At the same damper, faster RPM = exponentially harder watts—Concept2 notes that doubling RPM can multiply resistance by roughly eightfold. Easy aerobic work often lives at 60–75 RPM on a moderate damper; hard intervals creep toward 90–100 RPM only when you can still drive power through the whole stroke.
Always treat the live PM rpm reading as ground truth. Damper setting changes how heavy a given RPM feels.

RPM → music BPM: pick 1:1 or 2:1
- 1:1 mapping: 80 RPM → 80 BPM. One beat, one revolution. Works for recovery spins and slow technique work.
- 2:1 mapping: 80 RPM → 160 BPM. One revolution every two beats. This is what most people want for steady cardio—160–180 BPM tracks are everywhere; 80 BPM songs are mostly ballads.
Math check (2:1): RPM = BPM ÷ 2. Example: 168 BPM, one revolution every two beats → 168 ÷ 2 = 84 RPM.
Research on synchronous music during sub-maximal cycling reported lower RPE and less limb discomfort versus asynchronous playback (Lim et al., 2014, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, PubMed). On a fan-resistance erg, that external clock matters even more—without it, rep 3 of an interval often turns into a cadence spike that blows up your split.

Hold the console RPM steady for 30 seconds before trusting the row. Set your filter, metronome, or GagaRun target to the Music BPM column you will follow.

Accuracy note: Your damper, fatigue, and seat height change how hard a given RPM feels—but the RPM-to-BPM math does not change. If the PM reads 82 RPM and you lock 164 BPM at 2:1, you should feel one revolution every two beats. If not, soft-pedal 10 seconds, re-read the display, then reset your target.
Which ratio should you use?
Recovery / technique (60–70 RPM): Either ratio works. 2:1 still opens more songs (120–140 BPM).
Zone 2 steady (70–85 RPM): 2:1 is the default. Play 140–170 BPM pop, house, or hip-hop; pedal every other downbeat.
Threshold intervals (85–95 RPM): 2:1 at 170–190 BPM, or 1:1 if you prefer half-time tracks at 85–95 BPM.
Short sprints (95–100 RPM): 1:1 often feels cleaner (95–100 BPM). Double-time at 200 BPM is rare in normal libraries.

30-minute Zone 2 (damper 3–4)
- Warm-up: 5 min, free cadence → settle 65 RPM → lock 130 BPM (2:1)
- Main: 20 min hold 75–80 RPM → 150–160 BPM
- Cooldown: 5 min drift down to 60 RPM → 120 BPM
8 × 1:30 / 1:30 intervals (damper 5)
- Work: 88–92 RPM → 176–184 BPM (2:1) or 88–92 BPM (1:1)
- Rest: 65 RPM → 130 BPM (2:1)

Using your running playlist unchanged is the most common mistake. A 165 BPM run mix maps to 82 RPM at 2:1—fine if that is your target, disastrous if you meant threshold work at 90+ RPM.
Lock BPM without mid-ride scrolling

Why does Concept2 say 60–80 RPM in the manual but 80–100 in articles?
The manual describes sustainable aerobic cadence for new users. Training articles assume you are adjusting damper and duration—higher RPM with lower damper, or moderate RPM with higher damper. Both are official; pick based on workout length and heart-rate target.
Can I use rowing music on the BikeErg?
Rowing SPM (18–30) lives in a completely different band—see the rowing SPM-to-BPM chart. BikeErg RPM is closer to cycling. Do not copy rowing playlists unless you halve/double with intent.
Does damper setting change the BPM target?
No. RPM is RPM. Damper changes watts at that RPM. Choose BPM from the chart first; adjust damper to hit heart-rate or split targets—not the other way around.
