On an Assault or Echo bike, the widely used coaching zones are: 30–45 RPM for recovery, 46–60 RPM for steady aerobic work, 61–75 RPM for hard intervals, and 76+ RPM for sprints. To match music, double the RPM: music BPM = 2 × RPM, pedaling one revolution every two beats. Holding 55 RPM means riding to a 110 BPM track; a 65 RPM interval wants 130 BPM.
One honesty note before the chart: unlike StairMaster or Concept2, air bike makers don't publish official RPM training zones. Why the air bike punishes pacing mistakes
Air resistance grows with the square of speed, so calorie output rises exponentially with RPM, not linearly. Around 65 RPM most riders earn roughly 13–15 calories per minute; at 75 RPM it jumps to 17+. That's the trap in both directions: sprint two RPM harder than you can hold and you blow up in seconds, or let your RPM sag from 60 to 54 while zoning out and watch the calorie counter crawl.
Coaches consistently recommend staying above 60 RPM for conditioning pieces, because below that the wattage falls off so steeply you're grinding hard for very little credit.
This is exactly the kind of drift a beat fixes. The fan roars, there's no scenery, and your only pacing reference is a small number on the console. A fixed musical tempo gives your legs an external clock the fatigue can't negotiate with.

Air bike RPM (40–80) sits below any usable music tempo, so ride at 2 beats per revolution: BPM = 2 × RPM. Right foot drives on the downbeat, left foot on the next beat.

Calibrate once per machine. Assault, Echo, and Airdyne fans differ—the same RPM costs more effort on an Echo than an Assault. Spend one session noting what RPM you can hold for 10 minutes (steady), 1 minute (interval), and 15 seconds (sprint), then attach BPM numbers to your zones using the chart. The 2:1 math never changes; the zone labels shift with your engine.
Putting it to work: a beat-locked interval session
- Warm up 3 minutes at 90 BPM (45 RPM). Arms and legs together, easy.
- 8 × 1 minute at 130 BPM (65 RPM), 1 minute recovery at 90 BPM. The recovery tempo matters as much as the work tempo—coming down to a beat prevents the classic mistake of soft-pedaling too slow to recover with quality.
- Finish with 4 × 15-second sprints, music off or ignored. Above 90 RPM, no one is counting beats. Sprint on feel, recover on the beat.
