TL;DR: The number in the top-right of your Concept2 PM is pulls per minute (SPM). Match music with BPM = 4 × SPM (one pull every four beats in 4/4 time) for normal playlists, or BPM = 2 × SPM if you want true 1:2 drive-to-recovery sync. Concept2 recommends 35–45 SPM for most workouts; warm-ups sit around 25–30 SPM.
SkiErg SPM and song BPM only agree after you pick how many beats each pull gets. Skip that step and you end up pulling on every downbeat to a 160 BPM track while the monitor reads 40 SPM—or the opposite, chasing a tempo that feels dead while your arms spin empty.
Why SkiErg sync is not like running (or rowing)
Running is one footstrike, one beat. Rowing usually needs 4 or 6 beats per stroke because the recovery is long. SkiErg sits in the middle: the pull arc is shorter than a row, but you still need more than one beat per cycle unless you want to hunt for 70 BPM tracks nobody owns.
Concept2's SkiErg manual (2024) targets 30–40 SPM for general fitness double-pole work, with warm-ups at 25–30 SPM and comfortable steady work up to 45 SPM. The official WOD page lists 35–45 SPM for most ski sessions. HYROX race guidance often lands at 40–60 SPM on the 1,000 m station—faster turnover, same machine.

Math check: 38 SPM × 4 = 152 BPM. Reverse it: 168 BPM ÷ 4 = 42 SPM. Same song, different workout if you miscount beats.
Always treat the PM5 SPM readout as ground truth. Body size, damper (Concept2 suggests 1–3 for general training; many HYROX athletes use 3–5), and distance all shift the rate that feels sustainable.

Which column should you use? Below 36 SPM, the 2-beat column lands in 60–72 BPM—great for film scores, useless for gym playlists. Use 4-beat sync unless you genuinely want slow-tempo tracks. Above 45 SPM, even 4-beat sync pushes past 180 BPM; if your library thins out, drop 4–6 BPM and accept a slightly lower SPM rather than rushing recovery.

How to pull on the beat
- Set damper once. Pick 1–3 for base work or your tested HYROX setting, then stop tweaking.
- Ski 2 minutes easy. Note average SPM on the PM—that beats any blog default.
- Multiply. Double-time: SPM × 4 = target BPM. Example: 36 SPM → 144 BPM.
- Drive on the downbeat. Hands to hips on beat one; think power, not flail.
- Protect beats 2–4. Recovery is not a race. Float the handles up; if the next downbeat arrives before your hands pass your face, you're snatching early.
- Watch watts, not only SPM. Fast strokes with weak drive still lose splits. If pace drops while SPM climbs, lower BPM by 4–6.

Can I use the same BPM as my rowing chart?
No. Rowing steady work sits at 18–28 SPM; skiing runs roughly 1.5× faster for similar effort. A 24 SPM rower's 96 BPM row playlist (4 beats/stroke) would feel like crawling on the SkiErg at 24 SPM.
Is higher SPM always harder?
Not by itself. Concept2 is clear that power per pull sets intensity. A soft 44 SPM with weak drive can be easier than a hard 36 SPM pull. The beat controls timing; you still have to push.
Does classic alternating-arm technique change the chart?
Yes. Concept2 notes classic technique SPM runs about twice double-pole SPM. If you alternate arms at 70 SPM on the monitor, map music as if you were double-poling at 35 SPM—unless you intentionally sync every arm stroke (advanced, and the chart would use 2-beat sync at half the listed BPM).
