Concept2 SkiErg BPM Guide: Match Music to Pull Rate

TL;DR: Concept2 recommends 35–45 pulls per minute (SPM) for most SkiErg workouts. Match music using a 1:2 ratio (one pull = two beats): 70–90 BPM for steady state, 84–90 BPM for sprints. Most people prefer double-time sync instead—one pull every four beats in 4/4 time—so play 140–180 BPM tracks and pull on every other downbeat.

What is SkiErg SPM?

SkiErg SPM (strokes per minute) counts complete pull cycles on the Concept2 SkiErg: hands reach up, you drive down through the handles, finish at your hips, then float back to the start. One cycle = one pull.

It is not running cadence. It is not rowing cadence either, even though both machines come from Concept2. Rowers typically sit at 22–30 SPM. Skiers run roughly 1.5× faster because the pull arc is shorter and the recovery is quicker.

Concept2 puts most skiing workouts between 35 and 45 SPM. Long steady pieces sit on the low end; short intervals creep toward the high end. You can also push harder watts at 36 SPM with a real drive than at 44 SPM while your arms flail through empty air.

Every HYROX athlete seems to ski at a different rate. That is normal.

Body size, damper setting, and distance all move the sweet spot. A 1,000m HYROX station might sit anywhere from 28 SPM (heavy athletes pacing conservatively) to 42 SPM (lighter athletes trading power for turnover). SPM is a pacing dial, not a grade on your fitness report card.

1:2 sync means you drive on beat one and recover on beat two, same logic as our rowing machine BPM guide. At 38 SPM, that is 76 BPM music. The catch: almost nothing in your library sits at 76 BPM.

Double-time sync fixes that. In standard 4/4 pop, EDM, or hip-hop, one pull every four beats at 152 BPM gives you exactly 38 SPM. Pull on the one, stay patient through beats two and three, pull again on the next one. Your recovery stops getting rushed.

Why beat-matched skiing feels easier (and goes faster)

The SkiErg punishes rhythm drift. In silence, most people pull hard for 90 seconds, then their SPM creeps up while watts drop—a classic "fast strokes, weak drive" death spiral.

A 2024 crossover study in Frontiers in Psychology had athletes row 5 × 500m intervals with fast-beat versus slow-beat music. Fast-beat tracks produced significantly faster total times without higher RPE (Schittenhelm et al., 2024). SkiErg pulls follow the same upper-body cyclical pattern. The beat keeps turnover honest when your lats start screaming.

Karageorghis and colleagues have documented this for decades: synchronous music (movement locked to tempo) drops perceived exertion and cleans up repetitive mechanics. A metronome works. Music works better, because nobody wants to listen to beeps for 20 minutes straight.

How to sync your pull to the beat

  1. Set damper first. Concept2 recommends 1–3 for general training; many HYROX athletes land at 5–7 for more resistance per pull. Pick one setting and stop fiddling mid-workout.
  2. Find your test SPM. Ski 2 minutes at sustainable effort. Note the average SPM on the PM. That number—not a blog chart—is your baseline.
  3. Calculate BPM. Double-time: multiply SPM by 4. Example: 36 SPM → 144 BPM playlist.
  4. Drive on the downbeat. Initiate the pull when the kick drum hits. Think "hands to hips" on the one.
  5. Protect the recovery. Beats two through four are not dead time. Stay tall, let your arms float up, and resist snatching the next pull early.
  6. Watch watts, not just SPM. If your stroke rate climbs but pace slows, the music tempo is outpacing your power. Drop 4–6 BPM.

Sample workouts with locked BPM

Workout A: 20-minute steady state (Zone 2)

  • Target: 35–36 SPM, damper 3–4
  • Music: 140–144 BPM double-time
  • Structure: 3 min build → 14 min locked tempo → 3 min cool-down at 120 BPM (30 SPM)

Workout B: 8 × 500m intervals

  • Work: 42–44 SPM, 168–176 BPM
  • Rest: 2 min easy at 28 SPM, 112 BPM
  • Goal: Hold the same split across all eight pieces. If rep 5 drops more than 3 seconds, your opening SPM was too aggressive.

Workout C: HYROX 1,000m simulation

  • Target SPM: 34–38 depending on your race bracket
  • Music: 136–152 BPM double-time
  • Pacing rule: First 250m should feel almost too easy. Most time lost on this station comes from going out at 42 SPM and dying at 700m.

Common SkiErg BPM mistakes

Chasing 45 SPM on every workout. Concept2's ceiling is for short hard pieces, not 30-minute steady state. Long work at 35–38 SPM with higher watts beats frantic pulling.

Using your running playlist unchanged. A 165 BPM running mix maps to roughly 41 SPM at double-time—or 82 BPM at 1:2, which feels like pulling through mud. Running cadence and SkiErg SPM share the word "BPM" but live in different numerical worlds.

Ignoring the recovery phase. The pull is the easy part to sync. The float-back is where fatigue makes you rush. If your shoulders burn early, the music tempo is probably too fast for your current power output.

What BPM should I use for a Concept2 SkiErg workout?

Is SkiErg SPM the same as rowing SPM?

No. Concept2 recommends 22–30 SPM for rowing and 35–45 SPM for skiing on most workouts. The SkiErg pull is shorter and faster. A common rule of thumb from experienced users: skiing SPM ≈ rowing rate × 1.4–1.6, but test your own ratio rather than copying forum math.

What damper setting should I use with BPM-locked skiing?

Start at 3–4 for technique and endurance. HYROX-focused athletes often test 5–7 because it rewards powerful pulls at moderate SPM. Higher dampers favor lower stroke rates with more force per pull; lower dampers allow faster turnover. Lock your damper, then lock your BPM—changing both mid-session makes pacing feedback useless.

Can I use the same music for HYROX runs and the SkiErg station?
