Exercise Bike vs Treadmill: Which Burns More Fat?

At the same effort level, the treadmill burns roughly 20-25% more calories than an upright exercise bike, because walking or running is weight-bearing and recruits more muscle. But the bike is kinder to knees, easier to sustain for long sessions, and safer to push hard on. If you'll actually ride 45 minutes but only tolerate 25 on the treadmill, the bike burns more for you. I get this question constantly, usually from someone standing between the two machines at their gym trying to make the "optimal" choice. So let's look at what the head-to-head studies say, then get to the part nobody talks about: why most people leak calories on both machines without noticing.

What the research says: treadmill wins per minute

This one isn't controversial. A study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise had participants work at the same perceived effort on ten different cardio machines while researchers measured oxygen consumption. The result: at a "somewhat hard" effort, burning 300 calories took about 24 minutes on the treadmill, 30 minutes on the upright bike, and nearly 56 minutes on the recumbent bike.

A 2024 study in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living repeated the comparison across seven machines at hard and maximal intensities and found the same ranking: treadmill on top, spin and upright bikes mid-pack, recumbent bike near the bottom.

The reason is simple physics. On a treadmill you carry your own body weight against gravity with every step. On a bike the saddle carries it for you. Less muscle mass working, lower heart rate at the same feeling of effort, fewer calories.

Note the recumbent bike gap, though. It's not a small difference. If your fat-loss cardio is a recumbent bike at a comfortable resistance, you're burning roughly half of what the person on the treadmill next to you is burning at the same effort level. When the bike actually wins

Three situations flip the answer.

Your knees or your body weight say no to impact. Running loads your joints with 2-3 times your body weight per stride. If you're carrying extra weight or coming back from a lower-body injury, the bike lets you train hard today instead of after twelve weeks of base building. A hard 45-minute ride beats a cautious 15-minute walk-jog every time.

You do real intervals. Sprint intervals on a bike are brutally effective and nearly risk-free: crank the resistance, empty the tank, no eccentric muscle damage, no next-day hobbling. Doing the same on a treadmill means flying at 15+ km/h while the belt doesn't care whether you keep up. Most people hold back on treadmill sprints for exactly that reason, which quietly caps the intensity.

You're doing long Zone 2 volume. Sixty minutes of easy aerobic work is pleasant on a bike and mind-numbing or foot-aching on a treadmill for many people. The calories per minute are lower, but the session actually happens, week after week.

The leak nobody measures: intensity drift

Here's what I see on gym floors constantly. Someone starts their ride at a solid 85 RPM. A slow song comes on, or they get absorbed in a show, and eight minutes later they're turning the pedals at 65 RPM with the same resistance. Heart rate down, calorie burn down 20-plus percent, and they have no idea. The bike is worse for this than the treadmill, because a treadmill belt forces your pace while a bike lets you fade without any feedback.

The fix is embarrassingly analog: lock your cadence to music. A 2010 study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports had cyclists ride while researchers secretly shifted the music tempo. Speeding tracks up 10% raised power output by 3.5%; slowing them 10% dropped power by nearly 10%, and the riders didn't consciously notice either change. Their legs just followed the beat. A separate trial found that preferred music at 140 BPM significantly increased total work on a stationary bike compared with silence, and pedal cadence rose with it.

The mapping is easy once you know the trick. Bikes sync at half-time: one full pedal revolution every two beats. So 160 BPM music holds you at 80 RPM, 170 BPM at 85 RPM, and 180 BPM pushes you into 90 RPM territory. On the treadmill it's even more direct: one step per beat, so easy running sits around 150-165 BPM and brisk incline walking around 100-115.

Pick the treadmill if your joints are healthy, your sessions are 30 minutes or less, and you want maximum burn per minute. Incline walking at 10-12% is the underrated middle option: near-running calorie burn with a fraction of the impact.

Pick the bike if you're heavier, protecting a knee, doing hard intervals, or building long aerobic sessions you can repeat five days a week.

And if your gym has both, stop choosing. Bike for intervals and long easy days, treadmill for moderate steady work.
