What an EMOM actually is (and why the rest disappears)

EMOM stands for "Every Minute on the Minute." You start a fixed set of reps at the top of each minute — say, 12 kettlebell swings — and whatever time remains after finishing is your rest. Then the next minute starts and you go again.

That structure is exactly why the American Council on Exercise recommends choosing a rep count that takes just under one minute for metabolic work, or only a few heavy reps if strength is the goal — the rest break is built right into the format. Coaches love EMOM because the interval is self-regulating. Athletes hate it, eventually, because the rest is earned, not given.

A 2021 analysis of pacing in CrossFit-style training published in Sports identified three ways people get through an EMOM: blast the reps as fast as possible, spread them evenly through the minute, or break them into mini cluster sets with short pauses. The researchers noted that including deliberate rest between reps or clusters helps maintain form and avoids burning out early.

Wait, so the fix is just... moving at the same speed every round? Yes. That's the entire trick. It's also nearly impossible to do by feel, which is why gym timers exist and why they don't help — a countdown clock tells you that you're behind, not how fast to move right now.

The one-bar-per-rep system

A steady musical beat is the only pacing signal that works mid-rep. Nearly every workout track is built on 4-beat bars, so the counting is already done for you. Here's the setup:

  1. Pick your tempo. For most EMOM movements, 120–140 BPM is the working range.

  3. Start on the downbeat. The first beat of the minute is the start of rep one. Drive on beat one, reset through beats two to four.

  5. Rest until the minute rolls over. The music keeps playing; you keep breathing.

The burpee row matters most. Burpees at one bar per rep is a sprint you cannot sustain past round three. Give them two full bars — floor on the first four beats, stand and jump on the back four.
