Same playlist every day. If every run sounds the same, every run feels the same—and your body treats them the same. Grey-zone training by accident.
Using BPM as a proxy for heart rate. A 140 BPM song does not guarantee Zone 2. Heat, hills, fatigue, and caffeine all shift the heart-rate response. Use music to control cadence; use a watch or talk test to confirm intensity.
Skipping the slow music because it's boring. Easy running is supposed to feel easy. If 135 BPM tracks bore you, that's the point. You're building mitochondria, not a race-day playlist.
Counting strides or fartlek surges as "easy." A 45-minute run with 10 minutes of surges is not an easy day. It belongs in your 20% bucket.
How do I know if I'm actually running 80/20?
