If you're trying to match your treadmill speed to a specific music BPM, you probably want a simple conversion chart. The truth is, there is no single treadmill speed to cadence (SPM) formula.
Because cadence depends on your height and natural stride length, two runners side-by-side at 6.0 mph (9.6 km/h) could easily have a 20-step-per-minute difference.
That said, as you run faster, your step frequency goes up. Here is a baseline chart to help you find your rhythm.
Speed vs. Cadence
Treadmill Speed (mph or km/h) is just how fast the belt moves. Running Cadence (SPM) is how often your feet hit that belt.
Speed equals cadence multiplied by stride length. To run faster, you either take longer steps, faster steps, or both.

While everyone is different, biomechanical data gives us a solid baseline for an average-height runner (around 5'7" to 5'10").

Why Height Ruins the Math
A biomechanical analysis by Runner's World showed that speed and height are the two biggest factors driving cadence. Shorter runners simply have to take more steps to keep up with the belt.
"At a 9.0 mph pace, we observed a massive 40 SPM difference between the tallest and shortest runners in our test group," the researchers noted. A 5'2" runner might naturally hit 185 SPM at 7.0 mph. The "Treadmill Cadence Drop"
I hear this from runners all the time: their cadence drops the second they step on a treadmill.
A 2025 systematic review of running biomechanics backed this up. They found treadmill running causes an 8-millisecond longer ground contact time and a 0.20-meter longer stride length compared to running outside. The motorized belt pulls your foot backward, which tricks your brain into "reaching" forward. You end up overstriding, and your SPM drops.
