Your body is running two jobs at once

Here's what actually happens when the temperature climbs above 60°F (15°C). Your heart has to pump blood to your working muscles and shunt a huge volume to your skin for evaporative cooling. That's two competing demands on the same pump.

The result? Your heart rate climbs even though you haven't changed pace. A study analyzing 1,258 endurance races found that for every degree of WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature) outside the optimal 7.5-15°C range, running performance dropped by 0.3-0.4% (European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2021).
